Woman Claims Landlord Hid Cameras In Her Upper West Side Apartment
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Manhattan woman made a shocking discovery in the privacy of her own home -- hidden cameras had been recording her every move for months.
Women on the streets of New York said Thursday they were sickened by the alleged actions of two landlords, who have been accused of installing hidden cameras inside of a female tenant's Upper West Side apartment.
"Honestly it's shocking and just disgusting," one woman said.
The 26-year-old tenant is suing Michel Kadoe and Eli Kadoch, the owners of 7 W. 82nd St.
She claims they hired her to clean apartments in the brownstone, and her compensation was free room and board in the building.
According to the criminal complaint, the tenant realized she was being watched when she found a camera inside a digital clock in her bathroom.
Court papers say she took the USB from the camera and found naked pictures of herself and an image of one of the landlords installing the camera, CBS2's Hazel Sanchez reported.
The tenant called police, and investigators discovered high-powered cameras in the woman's bathroom and bedroom, along with more than 70 hours of video of her in her underwear, showering naked and going to the bathroom.
The criminal complaint alleges that the woman was recorded in sexually explicit acts.
"Secretly recorded the plaintiff engaged in a sexually explicit act, and the video broken down into mere body parts -- in particular fetished body parts," it said.
Landlord Eli Kadoch is facing criminal charges for unlawful surveillance.
Civil rights attorney Norman Siegel is not representing the tenant, but said the case begs for stronger privacy laws in New York.
"We don't have an explicit statutory constitutional provision to protect a person's privacy rights, so you go the tort provision in the civil law and claim extreme emotional distress," he explained.
The tenant said that the landlords have caused her severe mental anguish and is suing them for an undisclosed amount.
