At Least 2 People Spotted Climbing On Top Of Williamsburg Bridge
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- At least two people were spotted by witnesses on top of the Williamsburg Bridge Tuesday night, but no one has been arrested.
As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, police were called around 8 p.m. with reports of several people on top of the bridge.
Photos were posted to social media early Wednesday evening, showing at least two people and as many as three on top of a large stone pillar section of the bridge.
It was not clear whether they scaled the pillar to reach the top area.
Another photo shows two people sitting over the fenced walkway portion of the bridge. Witnesses said they were up there for about an hour, and appeared to be taking pictures of themselves.
Police responded to the area, but sources told CBS2 that no one had been arrested or identified late Wednesday night.
Another bridge trespassing incident happened just last month on the Brooklyn Bridge, when a student from Tennessee climbed into a restricted area.
"I climbed up one, got to the middle of the bridge and walked across," tourist David Karuanch told CBS2 via Skype. "I just turned around and took a selfie."
In a statement, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counter-terrorism John Miller said Karnauch's actions did not constitute a "security breach," but were still ill-advised and forbidden.
"The person most endangered was the individual, whose goal seems to be bringing attention to himself," Miller said in a statement. "It was however, irresponsible and illegal. Had the officers patrolling the bridge arrived while he was there, he would have been arrested, as others have been."
In August of last year, Russian tourist Yaroslav Kolchin was arrested for allegedly scaling the Brooklyn Bridge. He claimed he only wanted to take photos of the top.
And on July 22 of last year, two American flags on the Brooklyn Bridge's towers were replaced with whitewashed versions of Old Glory. Two German artists later claimed responsibility.
