NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The famous high-top fade is no longer.

But ever since Iman Shumpert showed off his clean-cut haircut on October 14, many have wondered why the fan favorite decided to head to the barbershop.

The Knicks' guard has provided an explanation.

In a video posted on the 23-year-old's official websitethe former first-round pick explained that following a rough preseason game against Boston, he decided it was time to look in the mirror and make a change.

"For the first time since I can remember playing basketball, I let so much stuff in the outside world, things that are going on in my life, affect me so much," Shumpert confessed in the video. "I wasn't playing that game to win. I was trying to beat my problems."

The video is named "Iman Shumpert New Beginnings."

"I think the perfect way to punish myself is to take my hair, just to end that whole separation of trying to be cool or trying to separate myself so that I look different," Shumpert declared.

So there you have it.

The 2012 NBA All-Rookie First Team selection is expected to be part of the Knicks' long-term plan. New York exercised its fourth-year option on Shumpert's contract earlier this week.

The third-year player averaged 6.8 points, 1.7 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 22.1 minutes per game last season. He appeared in just 45 games.

"My one goal is to get my ring," the 6-foot-5, 220-pounder said in the video. "That's to play hard and to play to win and to play amongst my teammates; play within my team, within my coaches, within my organization, within the city that I play in. Never, ever, ever put myself outside the circle ever again."
