West Side Building Complex To Drop 'Trump Place' Moniker In Favor Of Street Addresses
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) --President-elect Donald Trump's name will no longer be used to identify several buildings on Manhattan's west side.
Management at the Trump Place complex has confirmed that building names will be changed to street addresses.
In a letter sent to residents, management said that buildings at 140, 160, and 180 Riverside Boulevard --known as Trump Place -- would have their building names changed to reflect their street addresses.
"The purpose of this change is to assume a neutral building identity that appeals to all current and future residents. Using the street address for the building name is popular practice in NYC, and our well-known Riverside address makes it easy for visitors to locate the building," the letter said.
As WCBS-880's Alex Silverman reported, a VP at Equity Management said a more neutral name will appeal to current and future residents.
Late last month some residents of the Trump Place complex signed a petition demanding that the name be changed.
"He's disgusting, and you know it's embarrassing to tell people you live in a Trump building," Marjorie Jacobs said.
Jacobs moved in 5 years ago after she lost her home in Superstorm Sandy.
"The dogs are very comfortable and it's a pet friendly area. The building is truly beautiful," she said.
Jacobs said the stigma of living in Trump Place tarnishes its gilded exterior.
She's one of over 600 people who've signed a petition on change.org to remove the Trump name from the building.
"I can't say I'm for it or against it. It just seems, I don't know almost pointless," Spence Rathis told 1010 WINS' Al Jones.
But he added that since the buildings are rentals it made little sense to alienate prospective tenants.
Staz Stazvinovic said it's a continuation of the election.
"I guess people wanted it. Wasn't there a petition? That's how democracy works," he said.
Twelve buildings in New York City currently bear the Trump name, he owns three of them, but not the ones at Trump Place -- they are Trump in name only.
