Trump Jr.: Clinton 'Would Be The First President Who Couldn't Pass A Basic Background Check'

CLEVELAND (CBSCleveland/AP) -- Trump's children took center stage at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday night.

Donald Trump Jr. and Tiffany Trump touted his business acumen and what kind of person he is. Trump Jr. called this election the most important in our lifetime.

"We're still one country and we're going to get it all back, we're going to get it back better than ever before," he told the audience. "I know we'll get it back because I know my father. I know when people tell him it can't be done that guarantees he gets it done."

Trump's son slammed the Democratic Party over the country's immigration system, saying its the worst in the world.

"An immigration system that favors illegals than those trying to go through the process legally, and at times, even over law-abiding citizens," Trump Jr. said.

Trump Jr. stated that Democratic presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton "is a risk Americans can't afford to take."

"If Hillary Clinton is elected, she would be the first president who couldn't pass a basic background check," he said.

For her part, Tiffany Trump called her father a "natural-born encourager."

"I always looked forward to introducing him to my friends, especially the ones with preconceived notions because they meet a man with natural charm and no facade. In person, my father is so friendly, so considerate, so funny and so real," she said. "My friends walk away with a glimpse of all that he is and all that he means to me of the strong, protective, kind, endearing man I'm so proud to call my father."

She also shared a story about how she keeps her old report cards to look back at the notes her father left her.

"I still keep all of my report cards, some dating back to kindergarten, because I like to look back and see the sweet notes he wrote on each and every one of them. Contrary to what you might expect to someone who places emphasis on results, my dad's comments referred often to the sentiments expressed by my teachers about how I acted in and out of the classroom, just not even focusing on the letter grades themselves. Donald Trump has never done anything halfway, least of all as a parent."

Donald Trump was officially named the nominee of the Republican Party earlier Tuesday during the state's roll call.

As CBS2's Marcia Kramer reported, Trump Jr. cast the votes for the New York delegation that put his father over the top.

"It is my honor to be able to throw Donald Trump over the top in the delegate count tonight with 89 delegates. Congratulations, Dad, we love you," he said on the convention floor.

The theme Tuesday night at the convention was "Make America Work Again" as the focus was jobs and the economy.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie spoke before Trump's children took the stage, calling on the convention crowd to "indict" Clinton over several issues, including the Iran nuclear deal and her private server as secretary of state.

"Is Hillary Clinton guilty or not guilty?" Christie asked, as the crowd bellowed "guilty." The crowd was also chanting "Lock her up."

Clinton tweeted during Christie's speech, "If you think Chris Christie can lecture anyone on ethics, we have a bridge to sell you," in reference to the ongoing George Washington Bridge scandal.

The convention also heard from House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Another Trump son, Eric Trump, will be speaking at the convention Wednesday night.
