Tim Tebow Gets $75-Per-Game Offer From Indoor League's Omaha Beef
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The Omaha Beef have a job waiting for Tim Tebow if he wants it — and the Nebraska indoor football team will even pay him $75 a game.
A day after Tebow was cut by the Jets, the Beef called the office of Tebow agent Jimmy Sexton to offer a standard player contract. Beef assistant general manager Andrew Mather said Tuesday that he doesn't expect to hear back, but he thought it was worth asking.
The Beef's current quarterback, James McNear, has led the team to a 5-1 start. He's completing 70 percent of his passes and has thrown for 21 touchdowns against just two interceptions.
McNear is anything but insulted by the Beef's wooing of Tebow.
"I think Tim can learn a lot from me," McNear said.
The team tweeted on Tuesday to ESPN analyst Skip Bayless, "We want Tebow!!! Bring us on to talk about it! #tebone."
The popular but polarizing quarterback cleared waivers Tuesday and is now a free agent. It's unclear if any NFL team will give Tebow an opportunity for next season. His inaccurate passing, in addition to the relentless media attention he draws, makes for a tricky mix.
The Orlando Predators of the Arena League have offered him to play for them. The Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League hold his rights, but general manager Jim Popp said he could come compete for a job — as a backup. The Legends Football League -- formerly the Lingerie Football League -- wants Tebow to come aboard as a QB coach.
It's quite a fall for Tebow, who led the Broncos to the postseason in 2011, but became expendable when Denver signed Peyton Manning as a free agent. The Jets acquired him for a fourth-round draft pick and $1.5 million in salary, and he was expected to be a vital part of New York's offense. Instead, it was a miserable season for Tebow as the Jets failed to find an effective way to use him, and he didn't impress Rex Ryan and his coaching staff enough in practice to force them to give him more playing time.
Tebow was also leapfrogged by third-stringer Greg McElroy when starter Mark Sanchez was benched for a game late in the season.
