Teen Volunteers With United Community Centers Clean Up Yard Of Elderly Brooklyn Woman

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – It was an extreme makeover of a backyard variety as volunteers helped to turn a neglected Brooklyn backyard into an oasis of green.

Garbage and overgrown plants littered the home of an ailing, 80-year-old woman on Montauk Avenue.

A next door neighbor asked the United Community Centers to help clean up the yard.

So as a part of a surprise for the elderly woman, a group of teen volunteers are building a garden, planting vegetables and flowers.

"I like working," said one teen. "It feels good."

"It's an important thing that we help our community," said another teen volunteer.

The vegetables grown in the woman's backyard will be sold at a local United Community Centers farmers market.
