Swimmers Circle Manhattan In Marathon Race

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's the perfect weekend for a swim.

Just ask a group of people who circled Manhattan in a swim marathon on Saturday.

CBS 2's cameras were rolling as competitors touched a marker in Battery Park City.

That moment, one of victory, signified the end of a 28.5-mile swim around the entire island.

Among the swimmers was Douglas McConnell, who swam to raise money in the fight against Lou Gehrig's Disease.

"I'm pretty sore, I have to tell you. I had some challenges during this race today. My legs weren't really cooperating and I had a series of leg cramps that were frustrating," he said.

McConnell counted his strokes and said it took him exactly 29,611 to complete the swim.
