Police: Swimmer Caught In Rip Current Off Long Beach Has Died
LONG BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A Brooklyn man who was pulled from the water off Long Beach, Long Island, on Saturday night after being caught in a rip current has died, police said.
Police have identified the drowning victim as Kashawn Carlos, 23. He was pronounced dead at 8:13 p.m. at South Nassau Communities Hospital, CBS2 Valerie Castro reported.
Long Beach police responded around 6:30 p.m. to the beach area off National Boulevard, where a male swimmer had just been rescued by an off-duty lifeguard. The swimmer informed officials his friend was still in the water.
An extensive search was conducted by Long Beach police, Long Beach lifeguards, United States Coast Guard, Nassau County Aviation and the Nassau County Marine Bureau.
The man was found after being submerged in the ocean for about an hour and transported to South Nassau Community Hospital.
Swimmers were ordered out of the water at 6 p.m. when lifeguards went off duty Carlos reportedly chose to go back into the water and was then caught in the rip current.
