When the Yankees held the 6th overall pick in the 1992 draft, they picked shortstop Derek Jeter from Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The rest, as they say, is history.
The scout who was responsible for making Jeter a Yankee is Dick Groch, a baseball lifer, who is now a special assistant in the Milwaukee Brewers front office. Thursday night he was at Yankee Stadium, watching as the number-one item on his baseball resume reached for history.
Here's Groch, the former Yankees scout, talking about an oft-told legendary story about how he convinced the Bombers not to pass up on the skinny shortstop from Michigan:
