SUV Loses Control In Midtown, Plows Into Pedestrians On Fifth Avenue

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Seven people were injured, including a small child, on Friday afternoon when an SUV apparently lost control and plowed onto the sidewalk and into a group of pedestrians in Midtown.

The incident happened on Fifth Avenue near a Barnes and Noble bookstore, CBS 2's Derricke Dennis reported.

The child was in a stroller, Dennis reported. Umbrellas were scattered on the ground.

Witnesses told Dennis the SUV lost control traveling southbound on Fifth, spun around and wound up against the bookstore, leaving a broken stroller and a number of injuries in its wake.

"The stroller was destroyed. The child was crying for help, but he looked unharmed. I was glad for that," witness Ron Rivas recalled.

Witnesses said the driver appeared visibly shaken as he emerged from the car.

"The driver was very disoriented, looked really upset. He said he was injured. He came out of the car," Rivas said.

The injured pedestrians were taken to several area hospitals, including Bellevue.

The child was said to be in critical condition. The conditions of the other pedestrians were not immediately known.
