Major Delays Remain As Bronx River Parkway Reopens In Yonkers

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - There were major delays at the start of the Monday evening rush hour due to the closure of the Bronx River Parkway in Yonkers as Westchester County police investigated a suspicious package.

As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, the southbound lanes reopened around 5:15 p.m., after about two hours of being shut down. Authorities were able to identify the suspicious package and gave the all-clear.

The northbound lanes had reopened around 4:40 p.m. following its closure for about an hour and a half.

The Bronx River was shut down in both directions in Yonkers due to a suspicious package located on the side of the road. That triggered massive delays.

From the Yonkers Ave. overpass, Diamond reported that as of 4:45 p.m., there was still a very active police investigation.

The Westchester County Emergency Services Unit was leading the investigation of the suspicious package on the side of the road.

The package was found by a grounds crew around 3 p.m., Diamond reported.

There did not seem to be a sense of urgency as the investigation continued, but traffic remained snarled, Diamond reported.

Delays extended along the entire length of the roadway and added volume was reported on the northbound Major Deegan Expressway and the NYS Thruway.
