State Proposes Summertime Shutdown Of Indian Point Plant
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There's a heated debate over a proposed summertime shutdown of the Indian Point nuclear power plant.
New York's Department of Environmental Conservation has proposed shutting down the plant on an average of 42 days in the spring and summer to protect Hudson River fish.

About a billion a year are killed by getting sucked into the water intake for cooling the reactors, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.
Riverkeeper's Phillip Musegaas said the hot water return is lethal, too.
"That can kill fish directly," he told Adams. "The water temperature goes above 90 degrees."
Patricia Kakridas with Entergy warns of the potential problems if Indian Point is taken offline during peak usage.
"It's a liability," Kakridas said. "It would have an impact on the pricing of electricity."
The state wants Entergy to build a self-contained cooling system.
Entergy said it's a monumental undertaking that's too costly and complicated, Adams reported.
Hearings will begin in the fall.
