Sharpton, Kelly Team Up To Combat Gun Violence
NEW YORK (CBS 2) – The Rev. Al Sharpton and New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly have had their differences in the past, but now they're teaming up.
The two men announced a gun buy-back program on Friday that will take place in Harlem on Dec. 18.
The effort to stop gun violence comes after NYPD figures revealed a 4-percent increase in gun-related crimes this year.
"We must be active in stopping the gun flow and the gun shooting and the killing in our community and get beyond our differences and politics to preserve our lives," Sharpton said.
Sharpton's National Action Network will also promote the department's Gun Stop Program, which offers a $1,000 reward to anyone who provides information on the whereabouts of illegal guns.
