Second Suspect In East Harlem Pharmacy Robbery Caught In Rhode Island

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A suspect who managed to elude police during a wild shootout following a robbery at pharmacy in East Harlem earlier this month has been caught, police said.

On April 12, two armed men walked into RX Center Pharmacy on First Avenue and 119th Street around 11 a.m. and demanded Oxycontin, Percocet and cash, police said.

Officers responded to the scene after a pharmacy employee hit a silent alarm and found two workers and six customers -- including a woman and her baby -- being held hostage, police said.

As the suspects fled the store, one of them exchanged gunfire with responding officers, police said.

A retired NYPD lieutenant, who saw the chaos unfolding, fatally shot 23-year-old suspect Rudolph Wyatt after a brief pursuit down First Avenue, police said.

In the chaos, the second suspect managed to escape.

On Tuesday, the suspect was apprehended in Rhode Island by members of the NYPD's Violent Felony Squad and U.S. Marshals.

Charges are pending.

No one inside the pharmacy was hurt.
