Second Suspect Charged In Queens Shooting That Killed Girl, 14, On Bus Last Year
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A second suspect has been arrested and charged in a shooting last year that left a 14-year-old girl dead on a city bus in Queens.
Shamel Capers, 16, of Brooklyn, was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder, criminal use of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment in the shooting that killed D'Aja Robinson on May 18 of last year.
Another suspect -- Kevin McClinton, 21 -- was arrested in South Carolina and charged last year in the case.
Robinson was riding a Q6 bus in South Jamaica when police said a gunman fired at least nine shots from the street. Robinson was struck in the right temple and pronounced dead at a hospital.
Police believe the shooting was gang-related, but said Robinson was not connected to any gang activity. Then-police Commissioner Ray Kelly said it appears Robinson was an innocent victim of the gunfire.
"One thing is clear — she was not, in our judgment, the target of the shooting," he said at the time. "Terrible, this is, as I say, another senseless shooting."
