Second Mile Charity Laying Off Employees

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WFAN/AP) — The charity linked to the Penn State abuse scandal says it's laying off some employees.

The Second Mile was founded in 1977 by former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, who is accused of molesting 10 boys he met through the charity's programs.

Sandusky was removed from his home on Wednesday and ordered to jail later that day.  He was unable to post the necessary $250,000 in bail money.

The charity says in a statement Wednesday that it has lost significant financial support and that some employees will be laid off over the next several months. It didn't say how many staffers would be cut.

The Second Mile says it's saddened by the need to make the cuts, that it will try to preserve its key programs and that previously scheduled programs will continue as planned.

The charity also says it is cooperating with the attorney general's investigation and will adhere to its legal responsibilities.
