The organization's center in Waterbury is faced with the predicament of trying to aid people who used to be regular donors, now coming in to ask for assistance.
Major Annette Locke said the tough economic times have forced her offices to cut off requests for assistance when the figure reached 700 families.
"Very Very difficult. It's so hard, I think, for the families to step out and say 'I need this' to begin with. And then to have to be turned away," Locke told WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau.
The organization said that with donations down, dropping a few extra dollars in the kettle this Christmas would be a huge help.
