Rutgers' Eric LeGrand Back In Rehab Center

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Paralyzed Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand has been transferred to a rehabilitation center after being hospitalized with a high fever.

The 20-year-old defensive tackle was sent back to Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange on Monday, the university said on Tuesday. The junior from Avenel was admitted to Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston on Thursday with a fever.

LeGrand was paralyzed from the neck down on Oct. 16, making a tackle on a kickoff return against Army in a game at the New Meadowlands Stadium. He was treated at Hackensack University Medical Center for a little more than two weeks before transferring to Kessler, one of the nation's leaders in spinal cord rehabilitation.

High fevers, pneumonia, urinary tract infections and deep vein thrombosis are also complications that often come up with individuals with spinal cord injuries, according to Dr. Barth Green, a neurosurgeon and chairman of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami.

Rutgers said any updates on LeGrand's condition would be issued by the family through the school.

Rutgers (4-4, 1-2 Big East) has lost games to Pittsburgh and South Florida since LeGrand was injured. The Scarlet Knights need to win two of their final four games to become bowl eligible for a sixth straight season.

Rutgers will be at home Saturday to play Syracuse (6-3, 3-2). It also has games at Cincinnati, home against Louisville the day after Thanksgiving and a regular-season finale at West Virginia on Dec. 4.
