NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said this week that she wants to improve the quality of the free condoms that are given out to New Yorkers, according to published reports.
Quinn on Thursday said sex educators and health care workers, among others, have complained about the condoms, according to a New York Post report.
The mayoral candidate said gay rights and HIV/AIDS organizations have complained that the condoms are too small and are only offered in one size, and that they also rip too easily, according to published reports.
The newspaper said the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has not received any complaints about the NYC brand condoms this year, and has received only 80 since 2007.
The city-distributed prophylactics are rebranded regular-size LifeStyles condoms, the newspaper reported.
