Report: Mets 'Quietly Preparing' Long-Term Offer For David Wright
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Remember last season's day in, day out Jose Reyes drama?
It seems The 7 Line entrepreneur Darren Meenan's popular "Don't Trade Reyes" sign could be seen nightly at Citi Field. After the deadline, some Mets fans wore T-shirts imploring their All-Star shortstop to "Please Stay Jose." Of course, when it was all said and done, Reyes signed with Miami. He never even received a formal offer from New York.
The ballpark in Flushing may look and feel the same this summer with another homegrown superstar's future in question.
Then again, maybe it won't.
The Mets are "quietly preparing" to offer David Wright a long-term contract extension, according to the Wall Street Journal.
An "aggressive push" for the third baseman could come "at some point later this year—perhaps as soon as this summer," the Journal reported.
Wright has been on fire despite suffering a fractured right pinkie early in the season. His .400 batting average and on-base percentage of .489 lead the National League.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson "is still assessing Wright's long-term value," the Journal reported, adding there's "no urgency" because of the 29-year-old's $16 million team option for 2013.
There would surely be more backlash from Mets fans if a deal doesn't get done. The franchise would likely consider trading Wright during the offseason if the sides can't reach an agreement, an unnamed baseball official told the Journal.
Should Wright give New York the ol' hometown discount? Sound off in the comments below...
