Report: Cano Now Asking For Nine-Year Contract Worth $250-$260M
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The New York Yankees and free agent second baseman Robinson Cano are still far apart in their contract negotiations, according to the New York Post.
The Post is reporting that the last time Cano's representatives met with the Yankees, they were asking for a nine-year contract for $250 to $260 million. The Yankees then countered with a seven-year deal of $160 million and $175 million.
If Cano were to get what he is asking for, that would be an average salary between $27.8 million and $28.9 million, which would make him the highest paid player in baseball. It would also be higher than Alex Rodriguez's yearly salary at $27.5 million.
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com is reporting that Cano's offer also includes a 10th-year vesting option.
It was reported that Cano was originally asking for $310 million from the Yankees earlier in year, but while Cano was in the Dominican Republic over the Thanksgiving break honoring the World Baseball Classic Championship that team won earlier this year, he spoke with the local website El Dia and said, "Nobody has ever heard that come out of my mouth, and you're never going to hear it."
