NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Bronx priest is back at his church after he was shot in the arm Saturday evening in Queens.
1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported the 49-year-old man was shot while walking through the intersection of Rockaway Boulevard and 134th Street in South Ozone Park early Sunday morning.
Police said he was not the intended target.
The priest, identified as Reverend Damian Ekete, was taken to Jamaica Hospital and has since been released.
Parishioners told CBS2's Ali Bauman those in mass this morning were stunned after an announcement that Reverend Ekete had been shot.
Ekete is a Catholic priest at Church of the Holy Spirit. Police said he was heading home from Queens right after midnight when he was shot in the arm. Authorities said he had been trying to hail a cab after leaving a function.
The bullet may have come from a man in a car, police said. No arrests have been made.
Residents told 1010 WINS they were shocked about the shooting.
"I never hear anybody get shot around here for a long time. Not around here, not that I know of. I've been living around here for 15 years," one woman said.
Another resident said, "It's sad around here because it's a fairly good community, but people just don't know how to act. The things that they shoot for, the things that people bring upon themselves, is just beyond necessary."
Police are looking for the shooter.
