Protesters Shout Down Horse Carriage Driver At Court Appearance

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A New York City horse carriage driver was greeted by protesters during a court appearance Tuesday.

As WCBS 880's Irene Cornell reported, Saverio Colarusso was pursued from the courtroom by a crowd of animal rights activists shouting "shame, shame, shame on you."

He faces animal cruelty charges of forcing his horse, Blondie, to work for days with a painful leg infection.

A protest leader, Allie Feldman, said she wants the carriage horse industry banned.

"We've seen time and time again drivers completely breaking the law, abusing the law, not caring about these animals," Feldman told Cornell.

Colarusso's case was adjourned until Sept. 10. The protesters said they'll be back.

Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to ban carriage horses and replace them with vintage-looking electric cars.
