Witnesses: Pregnant Woman Shot, Killed In Paterson, New Jersey

PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A pregnant woman was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in New Jersey.

It happened at Paterson's Brooks-Sloate Terrace complex on Christina Place.

Neighbors told CBS2's Dave Carlin the victim was young and about eight months pregnant.

Friends say a baby boy was successfully delivered at the hospital.

Witnesses say the woman was in the complex's parking lot when a red car pulled up and someone fired three shots, striking the woman.

"We heard a girl scream, 'Help, help, help, I need help, I've been shot,' so I had my aunt to call 911. So then I put on my clothes and my jacket and everything like that and I locked my door because I didn't know, you know, what was going on and I have kids, so I told them 'Don't open the door' and I went to go help the girl," one witness said.

The victim has two other children. Her young daughter, who witnesses say is about 6 or 7 years old, saw the shooting.

"She was a good mom. She always came and went. She took care of her daughter. Very private," a witness said.

"Just literally saw her the other day walking with the kids, and to know this now, tragic," neighbor Tamika Frye said.

Frye was the victim's friend and neighbor. She says their kids often played together in the adjoining yard.

"I would see her every day in passing, about to have her baby. This is just, it's just... It's just sad. Disgusting, really," Frye told CBS2's Jessica Layton.

"It's about time we stop this killing, period. It's really sad. It's heartbreaking," neighbor Priscilla Roundtree said.

Three children are now without their mom.

"I'm glad the baby did survive, thank god. I wish she was still here because this is terrible to leave her kids here like this. It's just, it's all just too much," Frye said.

Neighbors say the victim was talking after she was shot and said it was her boyfriend who shot her, but police have not yet confirmed that information.

Police have gotten surveillance video from cameras in the area.

No arrests have been made.
