NYC Calls On Parents To Register Children For Pre-K

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Calling all 4-year-olds!

Universal pre-K begins Sept. 9 in New York City, but lots of parents still haven't registered their children, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.

Deputy Mayor Richard Buery said it's really easy to do.

"You can dial 311, you can text 'Pre-K' to 877-877," Buery said, adding parents can also register online at nyc.gov/prek.

Buery said there are 1,900 classrooms waiting to be filled.

He said pre-K will be educational play; it won't feel like school but it will put them on the right path for a lifetime of learning.

"You might have some children in one corner pretending to firemen, and chefs and cooks," Buery said. "You might have another corner of children going through their board books. You might have another corner with children doing Play-Doh or drawing."

The goal is to have 70,000 children registered.
