Cops Shut Down 'Barstool Blackout' Show In Montclair, N.J.; Tour Moves To NYC Friday

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A wild party caused lots of problems Thursday night. People were arrested, and dozens went to the hospital.

On Friday night, that same party is coming to Manhattan, reports CBS 2's Tony Aiello.

The cleanup came after the chaos. Thousands of young partiers tried to cram into the Wellmont Theatre for a beer-fueled dance party called "Barstool Blackout."

According to the event's Facebook page, the shows began in February along the East Coast. The tour bills itself as the "world's largest blacklight party; touring the nation leaving nothing but a path of destruction in its wake'."

Earlier this month, the Barstool Blackout at the Paramount Theatre in Huntington, N.Y. was also shut down. Six people were arrested; nine were hospitalized.

Montclair police officers found dozens of revelers intoxicated or under the influence of drugs Thursday night. There were also injuries. One girl was bitten; another passed out and was trampled. Police officers were pushed, kicked and spat on. In all, six people were arrested. Two dozen needed medical attention.

Derris Heffernan said it was a bad scene all around.

"The cops started coming in telling us to leave, yelling at us. Security actually pushed me, started pushing me," Heffernan said.

The "Blackout Tour" is hitting dozens of college towns. DJs whip the crowd into a frenzy. People drink to excess, wear clothing and engage in behavior that can't be shown on television.

"We're just trying to have fun, trying to enjoy ourselves. But sometimes people can get out of hand," one Montclair State student said.

"They're encouraged to dress provocatively if they're coming to the event, and they're expected to drink," said Dr. Les Kooyman of Montclair State.

Kooyman, a behavior expert, said raves like this promote substance abuse and sexual risk-taking.

"Alcohol breaks down our inhibitions. We can't make good decisions at that point. It's troubling that there's a cultural norm that this is acceptable and okay," Dr. Kooyman said.

Some young people have said "enough." There's a budding "Blackout" backlash, with protests held against the parties on a number of college campuses.

Critics say "Blackout" parties promote a culture of violence against women.

The tour's next stop is at Roseland Ballroom on Friday night. The NYPD will be monitoring closely.
