Police Questioning Mom, Boyfriend In Little Girl's Death At Bronx Apartment

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday for a 3-year-old girl who was found dead in a Bronx apartment, as police question the girl's mother and her boyfriend.

Police told 1010 WINS as of Saturday morning, they were questioning the mother of the girl, identified as Cristal Sanchez. Police were also questioning the mother's boyfriend at the 42nd Precinct, at 830 Washington Ave. in the Bronx.

But police said the mother was only being questioned because she is the girl's mother, and the boyfriend because he was the one who called 911.

Police would not confirm reports that the child had bruises to her back, neck and arms.

Family members said Cristal had been sick with a cold for three days, CBS 2 reported.

The child was found unresponsive around 1 p.m. Friday. Paramedics arrived at the apartment in the Morrisania section and tried to revive the girl, but to no avail.

The girl was taken to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, investigators said.

Sources said the child had bruises on her arms and neck.

The superintendent of the Bronx apartment building said there were never any indications of problems in the home.

"It surprised me when...what happened. You know, the family...I know them because I go and collect the rent," he told 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten.

The superintendent said the little girl was often in the care of the mother's boyfriend.

"I saw him all the time with the kid in the front of the building there. I played with the kid," he said.

However, the superintendent said that as paramedics tried to revive the child, the boyfriend was indicating the child had been ill.

"I heard what he told to everybody -- 'I told her, I told her to take to the doctor,'" the super said.

The New York City Medical Examiner's office will determine the exact cause of death following the autopsy Saturday.
