Police: Man Found Stabbed To Death On Sidewalk Near Union Square

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Police are searching for a suspect in an early morning brutal stabbing near Union Square.

A 25-year-old man was found lying in a pool of blood on the sidewalk in front of 25 West 14th Street around 4:30 Sunday morning, police said.

The victim has been identified by police as Michael Jones of West Harrison, New York.

Some people heading home from bars in the area said they saw Jones in a pool of blood and called police.

"They all walked past it and thought it was a Halloween figure or something," one witness told WCBS 880's Monica Miller.

Jones appeared to have his neck and stomach slashed open, the woman said.

"I never, ever, ever seen nothing like this. Ever," the witness from Long Island told Miller.

Jones was stabbed in the neck and taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to an NYPD spokesman.

"We thought it was a Halloween joke or something because his phone was there, so maybe if we tried to get his phone that he'll pop up or something," another witness told Miller.

That witness said this incident in the usually safe neighborhood has him concerned for his own safety.

"I usually take the same path, so if I was by myself and I was here 10 minutes earlier that could've been me," the witness told Miller.

No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing.
