Police: Man Attacks Family Members, Including 7-Year-Old Son, In Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Queens father faces charges in connection with an attack on three of his family members, including his young son -- before wounding himself, police said.

It happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday at a home on Jasmine Avenue in Flushing.

Quan-hui, Liang, 49, used a knife and barbell to attack his 7-year-old son, his 44-year-old wife and 77-year-old mother-in-law and then slashed his own throat, police said.

Neighbors on the quiet street can't imagine what would lead Liang to go after his family so violently.

"It's a terrible tragedy. Unfortunately I didn't know them so I can't really say much about who they were but it's just unfortunate that that had to happen to anybody," neighbor Kristin Kenny told CBS2's Sonia Rincon.

"When I heard the ambulance, I said, 'what's happening?' Then I saw three bodies come out," neighbor Jessica Kan told CBS2's Andrea Grymes.

"I don't even know what to think," one man told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck. "I can't even imagine that it would happen."

All four were taken to area hospitals.

Investigators said the boy suffered blunt force trauma to the head and is in serious condition. His mother, according to police, also suffered blunt force trauma to the head, had both eye sockets broken and numerous teeth knocked out. Police said the boy's grandmother had lacerations to her head.

Liang is in critical but stable condition. They are all expected to survive.

No one stopped by CBS2 knew the family, but neighbors said they just moved in a few months ago from China and are the homeowner's relatives. Neighbors described the homeowners as good people.

"They're a decent family, so you don't expect anything to happen to them," said  Kan."They're normal."

"Always say hello, how are you. Very nice people. I mean I don't know those people but the owners, very nice," another neighbor said.

Liang has been charged with three counts of assault, two counts of second-degree attempted murder, three counts of criminal possession of a weapon, three counts of harassment and acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17.
