At least twice in Nassau County, residents have received phone calls or letters congratulating them on winning a big lottery jackpot, but police detective Vincent Garcia says it's all a big scam.
"You might even receive a check saying this is partial winnings and then they said you must wire money to cover taxes," said Garcia.
Garcia said one man lost $10,000.
"If you receive a letter saying you won for a drawing you never entered, it is a scam," he said.
Officials say if you get a lottery scam call or letter, contact police.
