5 Hurt In Multi-Vehicle Crash In Park Slope

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Five cars collided in Brooklyn, injuring five people.

Witnesses say a couple of the cars appeared to be speeding.

Surveillance video from inside a business shows the moment a vehicle slammed into a parked car around 11:45 p.m. on Fifth Avenue near East 5th Street in Park Slope.

Moments later, cellphone video shows the aftermath: Crashed cars littered across 5th Avenue.

Police say a car was traveling southbound when two cars tried to pass that vehicle. That's when they collided and hit two more parked cars, reported CBS2's Nick Caloway.

"Cars screaming down the street, then a loud crash, and a lot of glass crashing," said neighbor Kurt Vincent.

The crash woke up neighbors, who saw someone pulling a person from the passenger side of one of the wrecked cars.

The noise didn't end there.

"Afterwards, what was interesting was there was a lot of people yelling and fighting," said neighbor Olivia Jarman. "Heard people fighting, saying it was drag racing. I don't know."

Police say they're investigating the crash, but police told CBS2 they do not suspect drag racing in this case. Still, neighbors told Caloway it sounded like someone was going too fast.

Video taken just minutes before the crash shows two cars speeding through the neighborhood and passing in the oncoming traffic lane despite the double yellow line.

Some say speeding in general is a problem in Park Slope.

"You'd be surprised. Later at night, around midnight, you definitely have people trying to race these lights. And impatient drivers going into the oncoming lanes to pass. It happens quite a bit," Vincent said.

Which is why some neighbors were not surprised by the pileup.

A total of five people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
