Officials: Problem With Hundreds Of DWI Ignition Devices

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - A problem discovered in some smart start DWI ignition devices could allow some DWI convicts to drive under the influence.

State officials say human error is responsible for hundreds of DWI ignition interlock devices incorrectly programmed at levels ten times higher than they should have, making it possible for the convicted drunk drivers possessing them to drive under the influence.

WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reports across the state 222 of them were improperly calibrated, seven of them in Nassau County and none in Suffolk County.

The problem is being fixed and additional safeguards put in place.
