NYC's Top 5 Bars On The Bowery

The Bowery, once teeming with drug addicts, punk rockers and bohemians, is now a hot strip of trendy restaurants, bars and boutiques. As the neighborhood has evolved, so has the bar scene--here are some of the best bars on the new, thriving Bowery. By Selena Ricks-Good.

Formerly Double Crown, this new, meat-heavy incarnation from the AvroKO team still maintains the adjacent Madam Geneva cocktail lounge. In addition, Saxon & Parole sports its own impressive drink menu, with libations such as the Celery Gimlet (Spring 44 Gin, Green Chartreuse, St-Germain, lime juice, celery juice and verjus) or the barrel-aged Prince Edward Cocktail (Compass Box Oak Cross Scotch, Lillet Blanc, Drambuie and lemon bitters). Or if you're in the mood for something simple to take the edge off, go for the Dry Martini Service, featuring Plymouth Gin, Dolin Dry Vermouth and a selection of garnishes.

One of the most handsome lounges in the city, the Lobby Bar at the Bowery Hotel is a plush setting for a drink. While hotel guests get priority seating, the lounge is open to the public as space allows. Sink into a chair next to the wood-burning hearth and sip cocktails such as a whiskey smash or mulled wine.

Peels

Opened last year by the team behind Freemans, Peels is a two-story Southern-style diner serving up rustic comfort food. Pair the grub with refreshing cocktails such as the Bond St. Swizzle (gin, orgeat, mint and lime juice with an absinthe float) or Ichabod's Old Fashion (bourbon, rum, homemade pumpkin bitters and maple syrup).

Hecho En Dumbo

Serving authentic Mexican cuisine in a warm and cozy setting, Hecho en Dumbo is a popular spot for cocktails as well. Try the Margarita Tamarindo (Herradura Tequila Blanco, house-made tamarind juice and cane sugar with a spicy chile rim) or the Esmeralda (Farmer's Botanical Gin, Ilegal Mezcal Joven and lime juice with muddled cucumber and basil) and chase the winter blues away.

The legendary CBGB's may be long gone, but rock music lives on at The Bowery Electric, a bi-level bar and music venue. Lounge at the bar on the main level or head downstairs for live music and DJs. Stumble in for happy hour from 5 to 9 p.m. daily and save $3 on all beer, wine and cocktails.
