NYC Homeless Count Takes Place Overnight

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - An army of volunteers fanned out across New York City overnight counting the city's homeless.

WCBS 880 reporter Ginny Kosola speaks with the homeless commissioner

"It's a massive effort that we do each year to be able to count the number of people who are on the street," says Seth Diamond, the city's commissioner of homeless services.

He calls it the Hope Count.

"We count how many people are out there and that so we can get a number that is accurate and that is consistent with past years in terms of methodologies," says Diamond.

Volunteers also inform homeless people about services that are available.
