NYC Food Truck Launches Slush Stand To Battle Summer Heat

By Perry, the voice behind New York Street Food

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- We know. It's hot out there. But starting on Wednesday, a New York City food truck known for serving ice cold slushes is offering some respite from the haze and humidity.

Kelvin Slush has unveiled their new "Ice Cube," which will serve as a permanent location for the vendor in addition to their roaming food truck.

The new Kelvin Slush cart is now in Little Red Square, on the corner of Bleecker St & 6th Ave.  It has all the same menu items that helped Kelvin Slush win the 2010 Vendy Award for Best Dessert.

Most food truck fans follow their favorite street vendors on Twitter to find out where the vehicles will be parked. Alex Rein, the founder of Kelvin Slush, explained why he felt the need for an alternative to his mobile creation.

"Our customers always ask us where they can find our truck," said Rein. "And we know not everyone is on Twitter yet. We love roaming the streets in our big blue slush truck and finding new places to park, but now people can know that if they are craving a Kelvin slush they can always just head down to Little Red Square."

The slushie creations are a step up from the ones you enjoyed as a child

First you choose a slushy base of ginger, iced tea or citrus. Then you can mix in fresh fruit and/or herbs.  Mix-ins include raspberry, basil, mint, white peach, mango, strawberry and more.

For our inaugural slush from Kelvin's Ice Cube purchase, we had a ginger base with raspberry mixed in -- an amazing combination.

Mint also goes especially well with iced tea, and a lot of people like to mix bases as well.  The Arnold Palmer is very popular, which is a combination of iced tea and citrus slushes.

The first rule of Kelvin Slush is there are no rules.  Mix and match whatever strikes your fancy.
