Sledding Hill Packed On Snow Day In New Jersey: 'All Part Of Being A Kid'

GARWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Heavy snow can bring out the kid in all of us, especially if you have a sled and hill nearby.

As CBS2's Meg Baker reported, the sledding hill in Echo Lake Park was equipped with bales of hay to stop people at the bottom, and families were putting it to good use.

Michael Levin said his family has been cooped up for too long, so it was a welcomed outing in the snow.

"No school today, so we're very relieved the kids can just actually enjoy, and be like kids, and have fun," he told Baker.

Cranford schools called an official snow day.

"We don't get those often, especially last year we barely had any snow. So why not go sledding?" said 12-year-old Jacob Slugocki.

But not everyone had the day off.

"It's a crazy year this year, so everything's something new," 17-year-old Will Byington said while shoveling.

Instead of sledding, many had to log on, like 9-year-old Scarlett Ruf in Westfield.

"On snow days, we would usually not have school, and I would be able to play outside," she said.

Nathalie Eckard took a quick break from school work to help shovel.

"Snow days are part of growing up, honestly, because kids get to be kids, and you get to go outside, go sledding with your friends, have snowball fights and build snowmen. It's all part of being a kid," she said.

Parents of those that didn't get a day off said they were disappointed, because snow days are one of the great joys of childhood and now more than ever kids need time to have fun.
