NJ Democrats: Reverse Rail Tunnel Toll Increase
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Democratic lawmakers want to repeal New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway toll increases earmarked for a scrapped New Jersey-New York rail tunnel.
A bill to reverse the toll hikes has been introduced.
The Democrats said Governor Chris Christie's plan to use the toll money to fund other highway, rail and bridge projects is "disingenuous."
Christie abandoned the tunnel project in October saying New Jersey couldn't afford potential cost overruns.
The Turnpike Authority approved toll increases to raise $1.25 billion for the tunnel.
Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak said Tuesday that the authority specified that the money could be used for other projects if the tunnel's funding fell through.
