New York Pet Fashion Show To Kick Off 10th Anniversary Event

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- As the supermodels hit the runway for New York Fashion Week, and the pure-breeds arrive for the Westminster Dog Show, the New York Pet Fashion Show 2014 is set to kick off Friday at Hotel Pennsylvania to benefit animal rescue shelters in New York City.

The event, billed as "10th Anniversary Diamond Celebration: The Crown Jewels of Fashion and Rescue," boasts of a canine fashion "extravaganza" that showcases pet clothing designers as well as some of New York City's shelter dogs in need of a loving home.

Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals spokesperson Stephanie Mattera told 1010 WINS the dogs will be fashioned in the theme of this year's show: jewels. "So every dog will have a jewel-inspired ensemble...it's a really neat show."

The proceeds raised during the New York Pet Fashion Show each year benefit a New York City shelter or rescue group.

This year, organizers chose the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals as the event beneficiary, as well as several Alliance Participating Organizations whose dogs will grace the runway.

"Our rescue groups that are part of the alliance will actually walk the runway. And those dogs will be available for adoption. And so it's really exciting - I'll actually be walking with one of our rescue pups, which I can't wait to meet," Mattera told 1010 WINS.

Those groups include Animal Haven, Bideawee, Bobbi and the Strays, Eve's Sanctuary, Metropolitan Maltese Rescue, Waggytail Rescue, and Zani's Furry Friends.

The fashion show starts at 6 p.m. with a welcome red carpet and ends around 10:15 p.m. with the announcement of this year's king or queen of the royalty costume contest, along with the 2014 designer of the year and rescue dog of the year.
