New York Comic Con Appealing More And More To Women

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York Comic Con continued Friday at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and women were increasingly taking part in the pop culture phenomenon.

As CBS 2's Tracee Carrasco reported, super heroes, comic books, video games and science fiction are all part of the celebration.

The annual convention was once thought of as just a boys' club, Carrasco reported.

"Mostly young men or mostly single men in their 40s who live in their parents' basement," Frances Slusarz said.

But that's not the case anymore.

The four-day convention quickly morphed into an event attracting more and more women, teens and young girls each year. Out of the 116,000 attendees in 2012, more than 40 percent were female.

"It's a lot of fun to just get together with a bunch of people who share your interests," Hannah Feldman told Carrasco.

"I definitely support the nerd girls," another Comic Con attendee said.

The women in attendance said they're genuinely interested in all that Comic Con has to offer and said the booths and exhibitors have something for everyone.

"I like the vinyl toys like Tokidoki," said one woman.

"I like comics, I like games and I really like dressing up," Feldman said.

Dressing up in crazy, over-the-top and even unusual costumes is a huge part of the draw for many.

"We're dedicated, we love it and so that's why we do it," an attendee told Carrasco.

"We sewed the corsets and just got the accessories," another woman at the convention said.

New York Comic Con runs through Sunday at the Javits Center, but tickets are sold out.
