New Village Aims To Bring New Life To Patchogue

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - It's hoped that a new development will bring new life to a struggling Long Island community, WCBS 880 Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported.

New Village in Patchogue is being touted as the prototype for future downtowns across Long Island.

The project will replace old vacant buildings with new retail shops, office space, and hundreds of beautiful apartments.

It's designed to attract young professionals.

Work has begun on the $100 million revitalization project and New Village is expected to be ready for occupancy in about two years.

Businessman David Richman described it as a village renaissance.

"It's going to beautify Patchogue," he told Xirinachs. "Ten years ago, you didn't want to come to Patchogue and I really think it will help."

"I grew up in Patchogue. My family has been here 72 years," one resident told Xirinachs. "I love the fact that they're doing something here. It can't do anything but good."
