New Jersey Legislature Passes Bill Limiting Gun Ammo

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New Jersey lawmakers have sent Gov. Chris Christie a bill that would outlaw ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

The state Senate voted 22-17 on Monday to pass the bill, which cleared the Assembly in March.

Last year, when lawmakers passed several gun control bills, this one did not get a vote in the Senate.

The Republican governor signed many of the firearms bills into law last year. But he issued conditional vetoes of some of the more contentious ones, including a ban on .50-caliber rifles.

Advocates say the limit on the capacity for ammunition magazines could make mass shootings less deadly.

Gun rights supporters say it would make it harder for citizens to protect themselves and could have the effect or banning certain guns.

Last year, the New Jersey Legislature passed bills creating a task force to look into school security, mandating the disposal of unlawful weapons, requiring more sharing of firearms information among law enforcement agencies and requiring certain mental health records to be submitted for background checks for those seeking gun permits.
