National Guard Delivers 1 Million Meals To Parts Of New York City Struggling After Sandy
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The National Guard delivered one million meals and bottled water to New Yorkers affected by superstorm Sandy.
The deliveries were made to parts of lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, including the Rockaways.
"After days without power, the most immediate need for many New Yorkers is food and water and the state is working aggressively to address this need." said Cuomo. "New York state will continue to deploy all our resources in response to Hurricane Sandy and adjust to the needs and concerns of New Yorkers so that we can ensure a safe and speedy recovery."
The first plane carrying supplies arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Thursday morning.
National Guardsman, the Red Cross, the NYPD and dozens of volunteers set up distribution centers and went door-to-door delivering about 30 tractor-trailers worth of food and water.
The centers will be open on Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

Millions in the Tri-State area have been without power since Sandy hit.
EXTRA: Tri-State Power Outage Information
On Thursday morning, Con Ed was reporting about 675,000 outages in New York City and Westchester County.
"This storm really hit us at a severity that was not seen before," Con Ed spokesperson Alfonso Quiroz said. "It snapped trees like twigs, it brought down power lines and overhead poles."
The utility was hoping to restore the vast majority of service by next weekend.
