Nassau D.A. Investigating Closure Of Bayville Catering Hall

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - The Nassau County District Attorney's office is now reviewing the accusations against a Long Island caterer after a waterfront venue was shut down without notice.

Angry and upset couples and their parents went to the DA's after they said they put down tens of thousands of dollars in deposits to have dream beach weddings at the Waterview Club in Bayville, only to have them canceled.

Then they found out that the owner is accused of owing over $200,000 to the landlord and the venue was shut down.

Kurt Krass told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall that his daughter was all set to have her wedding there on June 15.

"It's kind of like a Ponzi scheme. He kept taking money trying to pay off his bills, but then he just should have stopped," Krass said. "He already had a judgment against him and he continued to take money."

Over the weekend, Joseph O'Keefe and his fiance were searching for a new place to have their May 26, but he said, "Most places are booked."

O'Keefe had put down a $21,000 deposit.

"There's no reason to believe that he has the funds to actually repay anyone," O'Keefe said.

The owner said in a statement that he has been doing everything to make the events take place.
