'Make America White Again:' Nassau Cops Probe Graffiti Found In Mineola Neighborhood

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Anti-Semitic graffiti has been found spray painted in Nassau County.

As CBS2's Andrea Grymes reported, the message in Mineola came loud and clear when 'Make America White Again' was scrawled in the sidewalk along with swastikas.

"Stupid. Doesn't make sense," John Vallely said.

Vallely said the disturbing messages started at the end of his driveway, and extended in front of his neighbor's home.

"They're of Indian descent, and they're great neighbors. Young couple, couple kids, and they shouldn't be subject to that. And the neighborhood -- none of us should," he said.

Police said the derogatory graffiti was found last Wednesday morning, on Vallely's block and around the corner on Elm Place.

"There were two swastikas -- red in color, and again other disparaging and derogatory statements which I'm not going to repeat at this time against African Americans and those of Middle Eastern descent," Det. Lt. Richard LeBrun said.

Investigators weren't sure why these blocks were targeted.

"This behavior is that of a misguided individual. It's not acceptable to the residents and police of Nassau County," Det. Lt. LeBrun said.

Police have reported 48 bias incidents in 2016, about the same amount at 2015. They said there has been no uptick, and it appears no race or group is immune.

Nassau Police also just revealed that there was anti-white graffiti spray painted on sidewalks in early November in Garden City Park, including the words 'kill whitey.' So far no arrests have been made.

Police said they did not immediately alert the media about the incidents -- or the Mineola ones -- because they need time to look into them.

"We are continuing to investigate, and we are making sure there are no copy cats out there," LeBrun said.
