'Nanit' Baby Monitor Could Improve Sleep Quality For You And Your Baby

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Studies show that 3 in 10 babies have sleep issues. That's a problem for infants and parents.

As CBS2's Meg Baker reported, brand new technology to monitor your child's sleep quality is here to help.

"I found it's been a really effective way to track Jane's sleep," Kim Gorode said.

She's been able to monitor her daughter on the 'Nanit' cam, a baby monitor on steroids.

The smart monitor that provides sleep insights through first of its kind camera vision. The Nanit is safely hung above a crib to give a bird's eye view of your child's sleep patterns.

The analysis is all available via an app on your phone.

"Sleep is important. Sleep is a leading factor in development and health of a kid,"Dr. Assaf Glazer said.

The parenting gadget was created by Dr. Glazer at the Technion -- Israel's Institute of Technology -- which is currently partnering with Cornell to build a technology center of Roosevelt Island.

Glazer had his first son 4-years-ago and was driven by curiosity to understand his son's sleep behavior.

"Helps you manage sleep time for kids, sleep time, how much time your kid sleeps during the night, how much you visit your kid during the night," Glazer said.

The doctor said with so many opinions out there the technology will help you to make the best decisions for your baby, like when it comes to sleep onset -- how long it takes your child to fall asleep.

"We thought giving her a bottle right before bed would knock her out, but we found through the monitor if we gave her a bottle she had longer sleep onset," Gorode said.

Through using the app, the family actually learned that by putting Jane to bed earlier, she slept later.

"So this is also about your sleep. If your kids sleep better, you will also sleep better," Dr. Glazer said.

Gorode said knowing how well Jane slept the night before influences the way she treats her during the day.

"I'm able to give day care providers updates on her sleep, let them know she is going to need an extra nap she's going to particularly grouchy," Kim Gorode said.

The creators found parents on average lost 44 days of sleep during the baby's first year. The Nanti could be the solution to getting more shuteye for you and your baby.

Information on the app can be shared between parents and caregivers, the company said the technology is safe and secure.
