N.J. Carjacking Suspect Heads To Court Wednesday
NEWARK, N.J. (CBS 2) -- A carjacking suspect accused of killing a church trustee is due in Essex County court Wednesday.
Jamal Silvera, 21, was accused of stealing a municipal vehicle from the Lakeside Street Municipal Garage in West Orange last Friday.
Officers spotted the Ford Explorer and followed it into East Orange.
Prosecutors said Silvera struck 63-year-old James Callaway as he was leaving St. Mark's AME Church and headed to his car.
Members of the church and friends of Callaway were at a loss. "It's senseless. It's not worth losing a life or anyone else's in the process of a crime," Darrel Hall said.
Silvera was charged with murder and was being held on $1 million bail.
