Metuchen To Use Flags To Improve Safety On The Streets
METUCHEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - If the presence of a person in a crosswalk doesn't stop drivers, maybe a bright, orange or yellow flag will. That's the idea in Metuchen.
Route 27 and Main Street are tricky and treacherous with plenty of turning cars and drivers in a hurry.
The borough plans to put flags on sticks in holders at key intersections so pedestrians can wave them and get a driver's attention.

Reaction is mixed.
"That sounds a little silly. I don't think waving flags is a good idea," one man told WCBS 880 reporter Sean Adams.
"It's going to take them a while to get used to it, but I think it's a good idea," another told Adams.
"I just think it's ridiculous. If people cross the street ten times the same direction, where are all the flags going to be? On the other side of the street," said still another.
Pedestrian flags are already in use in Arlington, Massachusetts and Seattle.
One man told Adams they might work until all the kids in town steal them.
