Mets' Wilpon Hints At Minaya's Return
NEW YORK (WFAN) - Fred Wilpon, principal owner of the New York Mets, is reportedly planning to stick with general manager Omar Minaya next season, according to the New York Post.
Wilpon was in East Hartford, Connecticut, to announce a new deal between SNY and UConn basketball. After initially dismissing questions about Minaya's future, Wilpon cracked when asked whether Omar will remain GM past this season.
"Is the sun going to come up tomorrow?" the Mets' owner answered.
Minaya's contract runs through 2012 - with team options for 2013 and 2014. There has been speculation that the general manager would not be retained due to the Mets' severe struggles in recent seasons.
Wilpon was also asked about his son Jeff's performance as team COO.
"[He's doing] excellent," replied Wilpon. "Everybody knows that.'
