Mets' Syndergaard Scratched From Saturday Start Due To Strep Throat
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Noah Syndergaard is the latest Mets pitcher to be shelved, although his absence should be brief.
Manager Terry Collins announced Friday that the ace will miss Saturday night's start against the Phillies after being diagnosed with strep throat.
In Syndergaard's place, Sean Gilmartin will make his first start of the season and just the second of his career. The 26-year-old left-hander has appeared in 13 games this season and is 0-0 with a 4.76 ERA.
Syndergaard is 13-9 with a 2.63 ERA.
It's the third time in the past week the Mets have received bad news about one of their starting pitchers. The team announced last Saturday that Jacob deGrom would undergo elbow surgery and miss the rest of the season. On Thursday, New York scratched Steven Matz from his Friday start after the lefty experienced soreness in his ailing shoulder after throwing a bullpen session.
Entering Friday, the Mets and Giants were tied for the two National League wild card spots, with the Cardinals trailing by a half game.
